3D Modeling in Maya
Maya has a rich modeling suite for organic models like people and animals, as well as solid surface models like vehicles, weapons, and household items. The tools are functional and meet most needs, but if you’ve used Blender or Modo before, you may be missing some quality-of-life features. On the one hand, I’m sensitive to modeling and prefer more refined and intuitive gizmos for interactive tools.

In addition, several key modeling tools such as Multi-cut and Quad Draw are very well done. And while the sculpting tools don’t replace dedicated software like ZBrush, they’re very easy and robust to access directly from Maya.

Historically, Maya users have been warned against using Boolean operations because they can easily produce unusable results. New additions to the Boolean tools make them easier to work with, more flexible, and appear to be more stable than previous versions. “Boolean responsibly” because the results will still be ugly.
MASH
Procedural modeling is an area of interest and development in 3D software. This type of workflow involves creating objects not by directly editing vertices and polygons, but by setting rules and properties to produce the desired results. For Maya, Bifrost is currently the main area of active procedural development, but for most artists, MASH has been the heart of procedural creation, especially 3D motion graphics.
The original MASH plugin developed by Mainframe North was purchased a few years ago and integrated into Maya, but unfortunately, there haven’t been many improvements to the tool since then, and no replacement tool has been released. MASH is still confusing to operate and frustrating to use. When you need to achieve the desired result, some features may seem promising, but without a clear way to accomplish the task, you will only get part of the way. I would like MASH to have UI and feature updates or be clearly marked as expired. In the latter case, Bifrost requires improved functionality and usability to meet the needs of the artist. XGen is another popular procedure tool for both hair and environment that hasn’t evolved much in recent years.
Rigging and Animation
Army tools in Maya are very sophisticated and are the most difficult for artists to learn. Rigging often involves advanced math and coding, so it’s not Autodesk’s fault that rigging is complicated. In fact, the company has made efforts to simplify various operations. Human IK gives you fully built character rigs in just a few mouse clicks. Current skinning tools can provide excellent results with little effort, and there are third-party plugins that extend these tools further—ngSkinTools is a great example.
Making Maya better
If you’ve read this far, you might think that Maya is a hodgepodge of powerful features, old abandoned tools, and all sorts of annoying things. Why do so many industry professionals use Maya every day if other 3D software packages can offer faster development that fills in the gaps and fixes bugs? No doubt there are many reasons, but here are some of the main ones.
Interoperability
Almost no one uses a single program to create 3D digital media. This is especially true for large teams working on large projects. Maya is known as the core of pipelines through data transfer and transfer, such as game engines, sculpting tools, collages, etc.
If you need Maya to work with other software, add-ons like USD, FBX, Alembic, GoZ (for ZBrush), Houdini Engine, Send to Unity, Send to Unreal, After Effects Live Link, and Substance 3D are available.
